"I still hope he quits," Jen huffed. "But given that he won't I suppose I wish for the best too." She laughed. "He says I shouldn't worry about him, though. He says he has the easy part. If he dies like that he dies a hero and never has to think about anything again. He says he survivors have it hardest. But he says they shouldn't feel bad."
"'The heroes are stupid and know what's coming'" she sad in her best impression of Jeff.

"I'd have to agree with him."
A part of him remembered the day his parents died. He was the only survivor, he had to carry on with those memories. But another part of him said that Bruce Wayne was dead, replaced with the Batman, and as such he died that day as well, no survivors to carry on.

The survivors certainly did have it hardest. Jen, Jewels, and their father had been overwhelmed with grief when Jen's mom died. She couldn't feel anything anymore. It was the rest of the family that suffered, having to deal with the gaping hole she'd left in their lives.
"Still it must be harder than he says. If the 'heroes' really know what's coming I doubt they enjoy the thought. They must live in constant terror. They don't have the after shock but I wonder what their quality of life is like." Jen didn't really fear dying. Although she had enemies she always kept her agreements and thus kept her employers happy. And she was never the one who abducted the lab rats. She simply injected them with experimental drugs. When people went missing it was rarely directly tied to her. Only really happened when the test subjects escaped. So she couldn't see herself dying in the foreseeable future. Plus she was competent enough with a stun gun and revolver to keep angry people at bay.

"I'd think the same," he told her, "But sometimes the fear can be something to motivate them, to drive them. But...in the end, it's not always enough."

Floyd had to bide his time until the perfect opportunity arose. Normally, he'd just snipe the guy from another building, but the Wayne Manor was in the middle of freakin' nowhere.
No, Floyd had to it here. Right after he stopped talking to that woman, Floyd was going to make his move.
He checked the turrets hidden in his sleeves, all was good to go.

"I'd rather not live in a constant state of fear, though. I'm plenty motivated with my research without it." Suddenly Jen saw a familiar face and she visibly brightened. Seeming to notice her as well, Jeffery Thompson walked over.
Jeff place an arm on Jen's shoulder, beaming. "You're talking to someone besides Em? Good for you!" He turned to Bruce. "Please try to force your way through her cynical haze. My efforts don't seem to be good enough." He turned back to Jen. "You haven't been talking about me, have you?"
Jen smile. "Bruce compared you to Harvey Dent."
Jeff snapped his fingers and attempted to look distraught. "Foiled again!" There was a playful glint in his eyes that belied his theatrics and made it obvious that he was pleased with the comparison. "One day I'll outdo him and people will think of me first when you say Gotham Prosecutor!"

"I don't think Harvey needs forgetting," Bruce said, "I think we need to remember who he was, what he stood for. But I do hope that you will rise to the level you desire. We need people like you, people like who Harvey used to be. I hope you can reach it," he said.

Jeff laughed. "There's no way Harvey will be forgotten, not entirely." He reached into his brief case and pulled out one of the more recent Law Compendium. "His cases and their verdicts are all recorded right here," he said, tapping the book. "People will look back on his cases for guidance and use the rulings to help their own arguments." He laughed again. "Thick book of course and Harvey's barely in it but he's there and his work was important. At least the relevant prosecutors will remember him if nothing else."
Jen rolled her eyes at Bruce. "See, hopeless idealist."

"I don't know, I kind of like the hopeless idealist," Bruce said. It held something that Bruce couldn't quite place; a hope for the future, a hope for everyone?

Jen scoffed but Jeff's smile widened. Jeff extended a hand for Mr. Wayne to shake. "Good to see Jen talking to someone who hasn't completely given up on Gotham yet." "I don't really care about surpassing Harvey or anything. I just want to clean up the streets as much as possible. Harvey's work was amazing. I hope mine can be as impressive for the city."

Bruce shook his hand, "On behalf of myself, and many others, I hope the same," he told Jeff, "I hope you can help clean up this city. It doesn't deserve to be in the state it's in."

Jen rolled her eyes. "Bruce, you're going to be a terrible influence on him!"
Jeff eye's sparkled excitedly. "No, it doesn't. And I have a lot of plans to fix it."
"And I suppose if I told you, you'd done enough already you wouldn't listen?" Jen asked.
"Barely scratched the surface. Haven't put away nearly enough criminals," Jeff said brightly.
"There will always be more!" Jen said frustrated.
"Yes, but the point is to send a message. You let these criminal masterminds know they're not untouchable. You strike fear into their hearts and give the citizens hope. When the citizens start to believe in the criminal justice system they're more willing to help. They'll report things they were previously too terrified to mention. They'll start looking for help instead of a place to hide when trouble hits. Gotham's law system has lost the faith of the people. We need to win it back. Then we can do some real damage!" he said excitedly.

He clasped the man on his back, "I like you," he said, "Your words ring so true. If you ever need anything, I want you to know that you can come to me. We need someone like you, and I'll do anything you need to help."

Jeff grinned and laughed. "Thank you! Glad to know I have at least one supporter!" He jerked a finger at Jen. "Can't rely on that one's support," he teased.
Jen rolled her eyes. "Just don't be afraid to ask for his help. His resources might preserve your life a little bit longer," she said sullenly.
Jeff turned back to Bruce. "It's really nice to meet someone else who hasn't written Gotham off for dead. It's only dead when we stop fighting for it, when we stop thinking we can change it. Maybe we can't do much on our own but if we can inspire others and get them to change their thinking, we might save this city yet!"

"I'll drink to that," he said. He knew this man was probably going to end up a target. He had the potential to do so much good, but because of that he was someone who was going to be in danger. Bruce wanted to protect him, whatever it took.
