He nodded, "Right, that...," he remembered vaguely, but it was enough. "I'll be sure to look you up if I ever need that," he said.

Jen hadn't thought about Bruce in a while either but she never forgot a favor as few people bothered to help her, finding her disturbingly obsessed with her scientific fascination. She wondered if he ever would need a genetics specialist. Personally probably not. He seemed to be in great physical shape. But maybe his company would have some need of her skills.
She was still incredibly grateful for his help even all these years later. She wished there was some way she could help him. Some basic homework and study aid didn't really count. He would have been okay without her after all. But if she had lost that notebook...She would have been crushed.
"You still seem nice. Glad to see the business world hasn't completely crushed your empathy." He had kindly chosen to ignore her dress; and, he had taken some effort to remember her.

"It'll take more than business to crush that," he told her, "A man's moral being is a hard thing to crush, a hard thing to lose. I'm not interested in losing sight of myself. Not yet."

"I'm surprised you can say that in Gotham city. I'm certainly glad you've held onto your moral fiber but a lot of people here would sell it out in a second to get their hands on some power and wealth." She should know. She'd worked for some.
She arched her eyebrows. "Not yet? You planning on selling out one day?" She laughed. "Not like you could get much more than you already have."

"Nobody knows the future," he told her, "Maybe someday I will. Maybe someday I'll weaken in my resolve, but for now, I refuse to. I won't let Gotham change me. I am me, and I will remain as myself as long as I can."

Jen beamed. "You know, you sound a lot like my idealistic boyfriend. Jeff's always telling me I'm being way too negative and that people only compromise their morals when they lose sight of what's really important." She rolled her eyes. "I don't know how he can be so optimist being a Gotham prosecutor who actually tries to prosecute the untouchables. He's lost more cases than he can count because someone or other was bought off."

"He shouldn't give up," Bruce told her, "We need good men like him, after Harvey...," he trailed off. What happened to Harvey Dent had been horrible, and he still felt responsible for it. Harvey had been a wonderful man, and a wonderful prosecutor who helped to clean up Gotham.
Now...

Jen sighed. "Yes, but I don't particularly want him to end up the same way Harvey did." She shook her head. "You don't have to worry though. Jeff is really dedicated." She grinned wryly. "He gets as wrapped up in his work as I do in mine." Her gaze became quite cold. "He won't die of old age. One day someone will really kill him. He'll finally bite off more than he can chew and no matter what he's threatened with he won't compromise his morals so they'll have to end him." She shook her head. "Jeffrey Thompson is already too much of a public face. I can only imagine how much he's been threatened." He never talked to her about it.

"I'm afraid that that's the fate of most good people in this city," Bruce told her, "It's a hard thing to accept, but it's very likely what's to happen. We should all accept it, because it's inevitable, unless we can change this city."

Jeff was precious. He didn't know what she did and if he did he'd loathe her; but, he was still special. She couldn't stand the thought of losing him. "He doesn't think he can change it," she whispered, frustrated. "So I don't know why he fights so hard." What point was there in struggling against the tide? You'd die and nothing would really change. What was worth you life? Corpses couldn't do any good.

"Because we all need something to fight for. Even if we can't change things, we need it anyway," he told her.

"Most people have already forgotten about Harvey. No matter how much good Jeff does it'll never be enough to make a real difference or to make people care. Why can't he fight for something safer?"

She sighed. "You really do have his idealism. He keeps telling me it would pointless if it was simple." She looked to Bruce expectantly. "Well you remember Harvey. Hopefully you'll remember Jeff afterwards too. And for his sake hopefully he can do more good than Harvey." She chuckled. "He doesn't care about the fame but he's really quiet competitive. He reads over all of Harvey's old cases and thinks about how he could have improved them. And he wants to outdo Harvey in his own way."

He nodded. He didn't know what to say to her. He'd remember everyone who fought for this city, everyone who tried to help it. Their faces would haunt him, if they died for it. Nobody should have to die, not with him around, not with him here to help this city.
"I hope all the best for him," Bruce chose to say.
