Overview: Kate has a tenuous mental stability. She is obsessed with all aspects of fear, fear in herself as much as others. She was an abused child who was terrified all the time.
“If I’m afraid, I won’t be alone. I will make everyone as terrified as me. No! More afraid! I’ve lived in fear. I’ve lived in hell! I’m stronger! I will drag them into the depths of purgatory! I will break them! I will outlast them! They will kill themselves to escape the torment while I sit there laughing!”
She wants to conquer her fears to the best of her abilities. She doesn’t believe it’s possible to completely alleviate terror, just minimize it and cope. The minimizing isn’t impressive. The coping is what takes true will power. Above all else she values the ability to move forward in the midst of terror. Her brain and will power are what make her better than the stupid jocks. They bully people into submission with their crude fists and implied threats of social ostracization. But they understand nothing of true terror. When faced with it, their puny minds shut down. It’s a reversal of power she thoroughly enjoys. The brain is the real weapon. It is the only thing that can see a person through fear.
She is determined to continuously test her fear tolerance. She doesn’t want to become soft and weak. To be able to exploit other’s fears and manipulate them it is important to be able to hide your own weaknesses even when they’re flung in your face. She always assumes that people will be able to figure out what makes her tick and throw it at her to foil her plans. And she wants to look down on the people she breaks, the people she scares witless and drives to suicide. If she couldn’t handle her own nightmares she’d be no better than they were. Just more lucky. Lucky that she didn’t have to face a competent adversary.
She pretends to be a kind hearted girl who wants to pursue the path of the psychiatrist to cure people and bring them happiness through mental stability. It’s all a ruse, though. She wants to terrify and psychologically break as many people as possible.
She deeply admires both Dr. Crane and Scarecrow. (She’s unaware that they’re the same person.) Although Dr. Crane’s good nature and good will to patients can be a bit upsetting (think of how much fear he could spread, how much damage he could do if he reversed his tendencies), she finds his fear theories both fascinating and highly plausible regardless of how others interpret them. She has read every single one of his articles. She eagerly drinks in his words and yearns for more.
Scarecrow, she admires for his ability to instill terror in so many people. She is greatly impressed with his success in numbers; but, she does feel he loses something important by targeting so many at a time. Kate seldom tries to scare a group. Terror, she believes, should be nurtured and cultivated like a fine wine. She selects one target and studies them intimately. She learns their nature, hopes, dreams, ambitions, and most importantly their fears. She steadily unnerves them by playing on their fears bit by bit. Their terror as they wait to see what will happen next is half the fun. Fear isn’t to be rushed and ended quickly. No..watching them struggle...watching them drown in their nightmares...watching them squirm and twitch and panic as they wait for the next surprise....That’s what it’s all about.
Other Equipment:
- concealed desert eagle .50 caliber
- Nightmare (crow that will fly to her side and attack others on command)
History
Kate was loathed before she was even born. She was the result of a one night stand. The mother, Julia confessed her sins to the father, Frederick after the initial transgression. Frederick, loving Julia dearly, after some time forgave her as it was merely a physical attraction. The matter should have been resolved. It would have been had it not been for Kate. Julia had gotten pregnant and as a Catholic, she refused to have an abortion. Frederick begged her to give up the child that was not his own; but, she refused. Frederick was particularly bitter about Kate since he and Julia had been unable to have a child of their own. Julia had miscarried their baby.
Frederick hoped for another miscarriage but Kate was born healthy. Unfortunately, Julia did not fair so well. She died shortly after childbirth given complications with a C-section.
Frederick loathed Kate. Not only did she live when his own little girl had died, but she had killed the love of his life too. At least that was the way he saw it. After all the pain Kate had caused him, he would make sure the girl suffered.
Kate’s father was afraid of someone taking Kate away. If she was taken into protective custody the little monster wouldn’t be punished like she deserved. Although at times he was physically abusive, he focused on psychological abuse. He called her terrible names. He always told her that she was worthless and stupid. He locked her in the attic. On several occasions he pushed her off their balcony. (He knew the distance wasn’t enough to kill her, just rough her up a bit. This was how she developed her fear of heights.) He would pretend to give her poisoned food and then proceed to make her eat it. He threatened her with his gun. To say the least, her home life was hell.
He read her a study about crows. Crows were very smart birds. They had a person wear a strange mask and throw stones at them. The crows would communicate with each other. Whenever that guy would wear the mask and walk outside he’d be attacked by murders of crows.
He took Kate to an area infested with crows. At the time she wasn’t afraid of them. He told her that if she didn’t throw a stone at them he’d lock her in the attic for hours and push her off the roof a couple of times for good measure. She threw several pebbles and the murder of crows viciously attacked her. She was a bloody mess by the time the paramedics made their way to her side. From that day forth she was horrified of crows.
Not only was her home life hell but she was bullied at school as well. She wasn’t safe at home. She wasn’t safe at school. Terror. She was in a complete state of fear wherever she went. Eventually she couldn’t take it anymore. It wasn’t fair that she was the only one to suffer. She would get stronger and make the people who laughed at her plight regret their cruelty towards her.
When her father wasn’t around she stole his gun and practiced with it. And when she wasn’t practicing she tried to cope with her own fears. She jumped off the roof herself. She sought out crows and tried to face them. She read up on poisons so she could better tell when her father was playing games. And she began studying fear and phobias. She knew the signs in herself. She started to look for them in others.
During one of her attempts to face the crows she found one with an injured wing. Figuring it would be a great test of coping with fear, she took it home. She hid it from her father and tended to it. She named him Nightmare and trained him to come to her on command. And not just come to her. She trained him to peck at others, aiming for the eyes when she ordered it so.
She held a grudge well. She planned on terrifying everyone who had ever scared her. She wanted to deal with her father first but she knew she couldn’t. She would need his money for further education. And without an education there would be no future for her. And she would build a future. He tried to destroy Kate but he had failed. She would be the one to destroy him. She dealt with the bullies at school one by one. First studying up on them, uncovering their fears. Then slowly drowning them in them. Two of the bullies went insane. Another two committed suicide. She loved the reversal of power. They had only beaten her body. But her mind had dominated their will. She had pushed them to the brink of madness and beyond.
She worked on her father, careful not to push him too far. Not until she turned 18. He shot himself with the gun he had constantly used to threaten Kate on her 18th birthday. She inherited everything. And she knew it would be enough to pay for school.
She attended Gotham University. She knew by then that she wanted to be a psychiatrist. She wanted to better understand terror so she could more beautifully manipulate it. She was in Dr. Crane’s psychology class. She loved his theories and the way he taught. She would always stay after class to ask him many questions not just about his class but his articles as well.
She was the student who was injured when he fired a gun in class to demonstrate the psychology of fear. She of course was terrified, especially when she started bleeding. She’d never been shot before. But she didn’t begrudge Dr. Crane her injury. Far from it. She was impressed at the length he went to teach his theories. And she was constantly testing her fear tolerance. That was certainly a fantastic test. Due her continuous practice, she coped very well. Despite her intense fright she politely asked Dr. Crane to call 911.
The medics came quickly and rusher to the hospital. Fortunately, no vitals were hit. She was going to recover and be just fine. She was horrified when she realized the University was going to fire Dr. Crane, her favorite professor, for an injury that wasn’t life threatening and that she didn’t particularly care about. She tried to argue with the board of directors. She promised she wouldn’t press charges against either Dr. Crane or the university. She insisted that it was an accident, even though she wasn’t entirely certain it was (the prospect of which thrilled her. Maybe he wasn’t quite as benevolent as he appeared. Maybe he liked to scare people on occasion too.) She explained how Dr. Crane was an outstanding teacher, an inspiration to students everywhere and how much worse off the university would be without him. They didn’t buy it. Viewing Dr. Crane as a liability, he was fired. However, since she wasn’t going to press charges and since she swore it was an accident and she bore him no ill will, he wasn’t arrested.
She graduated from Gotham University but got accepted into their med school program, planning to continue the path to psychiatry. Although it is customary to get experience after finishing med school, she got an internship with Arkham Asylum. She really wanted to see Dr. Crane again and watch the master at work to improve her own understanding of the psychology of fear. She also wanted to apologize for not being able to save his job. She still feels horrible about that.
She didn’t give up uncovering others fears and breaking them in college. She caused several students to have mental break downs. It was assumed they just couldn’t handle the stress of college. She’s eager to see what damage she can do in the insane asylum. The people are supposedly already broken but she doesn’t believe they’re so far lost she can’t push them further into the depths of terror and despair. And if patients should have a relapse...Well that’s to be expected in an insane asylum. It won’t negatively influence her or Dr. Crane.
