Overview: Jeff is a motivated prosecutor whose work is his life. He takes on a lot of pro bono cases. He is a public face who violently goes after criminals others are too scared to touch with everything he has. He takes every loss personally no matter who was bought off. He always blames himself for a lack of knowledge or for not adequately dealing with the corruption. He will become super depressed and withdrawn after losing a case. He relies on The Question for help to prosecute those difficult criminals. He knows he is an accomplice to the Question who uses illegal methods to get things done. He loathes the fact that he must break the law to bring despicable people to justice.
He is not ignorant about his legal breaches. He records each and every transgression in a notebook he has under lock and key in his home. When Gotham is a cleaner, less corrupt city with no need for someone like him he does plan on turning himself over to the legal system. He is fiercely loyal to all those who help him with his work. He would never dream of incriminating his contacts in any way. He keeps all his informants secret and tries to help them anyway he can.
Despite being super intense and serious about his work he is very kind. He will help people without asking for anything in return. Unlike many lawyers he is not wealthy because he does so much pro bono work. Then he donates a great deal of his money to the victims of the people he prosecutes and the witnesses who testified again the criminal scum.
He speaks the words of an idealist, giving hope to others but leaving none for himself. He is actually quite cynical and paranoid, has to be to survive in his field and do what he does. But most would never guess it. He always talks about legally catching criminals, following the law, changing it when there are sickening loop holes, and a bright future filled with hope.
Other Equipment:
- unloaded pistol
- tablet
- notebook
- briefcase
History
He was born to a Robert and Martha Thompson. Robert was a corrupt businessman, prevalent in Wayne Industries. He was also incredibly abusive. Unfortunately he was very influential and had many people in his pocket so there wasn’t much chance in getting any help. Jeff was four years old and his brother was one when their mother fled, abandoning them. As the older brother Jeff did his best to protect Avi. When their father got into one of his moods he’d shield his brother and direct their father’s attention to him. Avi was the only family he could rely on and he loved him dearly. He’d do anything to protect him.
Avi was riddled with guilt for everything Jeff did for him. Jeff tried to be strong and assure him. He never allowed himself to cry in front of Avi. He tried to be the perfect, nurturing, protective older brother.
Originally Jeff planned on taking off three years before applying to college. He couldn’t bare to leave his little brother alone with their monster of a father. Avi, already wracked with guilt for how much abuse Jeff took to protect him committed suicide. He left a letter saying how he couldn’t bare to watch Jeff give up his future for Avi when he had already given up his childhood. Jeff vowed to become a prosecutor so he could punish supposedly untouchable people like his father. He went to Duke for college and Washington University for law school. He came home only when absolutely necessary, usually during winter break. He always found a reason to stay at school during the summer, either taking classes or getting work experience. As much as it pained him to keep up relations with his father he knew he had to maintain the connection. College and law school weren't cheap. He needed the financial aid.
He returned to Gotham city to begin his crusade against criminals. He didn't touch his father becaue he knew he was too emotionally invested to be rational and make good decisions. He's furious that his rather remains unpunished after all the horrible things he's done. However, his dad is not a priority as he's retired now and is thus not a threat to Gotham's continued stability. Still, his father is a constant source of frustration and bitterness especially since at periodic intervals his father reminds his son how ashamed he is in him. He's disgusted that his son is a prosecutor who puts himself in danger by fighting against the tide of corrupt people. On top of that he makes practically no money by Robert's standards. He takes on too many pro bono cases. He goes far beyond the call of duty for all of his cases and doesn't charge for the extra hours. And what little money he makes he throws away, giving it to victims/witnesses. Jeff doesn't answer his father's calls and tries to avoid him as much as possible but his dad still leaves the occasional voice mail, text, and e-mail, yelling at his son, trying to get him to pull his act together.
In Gotham he met his girlfriend Jen. She was as dedicated to her work as he was to his. Neither could discuss what they did in detail and they were fine with that. They simply supported the other. They were both work aholics, married to the work, and people who favored notebooks over computers. And since neither could discuss their work they were a good way to get out of each other’s heads.
