Overview:
Julia was controlled and manipulated for as long as she can remember so she’s somewhat confused as to what she wants for herself. All she knows for sure is that she desires choices, the ability to pave the future for herself. She was wrapped up in the French underworld pretty tightly so she’s terrified of people coming after her, seeking revenge.
She’s not sure where she morally stands. She craves justice; but, she doesn’t believe ideals alone will lead to a good world. The criminal underworld thrives by breaking rules and she doubts that laws alone will be capable of bringing their horrendous activities to a halt. She doesn’t have a problem with bending or outright breaking the rules to create a better future. Even killing isn’t taboo. She believes that some people are simply too dangerous to be imprisoned. Jacques was arrested for a time and still managed to manipulate the crime world from behind prison bars. She doesn’t really have a problem with revenge either, figuring some people truly deserve it. She’s seen them.
Having only recently escaped the clutches of her father she thinks she wants a clean living but is unsure of what that means and doubts her ability to pull it off. She’s never been separate from the criminal underworld.
She’s never had romance or even friendship. The concept of loyalty itself is somewhat difficult to grasp as no one has ever show her any loyalty. She’s only been manipulated and controlled.
She has a wry sense of humor and a quick wit. She’s been told on numerous occasions that she has a strange sense of humor.
Julia is skeptical of others and incredibly cynical and paranoid due to her upbringing. What little optimism she has is fixated on building a brighter future for herself.
She is an excellent computer hacker, particularly skilled at digitally tracking people’s movements and securing illegal substances. As good as she is with computers she’s even better with poisons. She can analyze them, determine exactly what a person was poisoned with and how. She can create known ones and she experiments on her own, making new poisons. She is equally versed with the antidotes. She has fast reflexes so that she can inject people swiftly in crowded areas and flee. She is an incredibly fast runner.
Her body is physically weak but she utilizes speed and stealth to compensate. She can blend into the background in practically any situation. It has been necessary for her to cover her trails and go unnoticed.
Other Equipment:
- needles/syringes
- bottles upon bottles of poisons and corresponding antidotes
History
Julia was the result of a brief affair between Mademoiselle Maria, and Alfred Pennyworth. Alfred left France before realizing Mari was pregnant. Mari didn’t feel she could properly care for a child given her dangerous line of work so she gave Julia to a friend Jaques Remarque to raise. Although Maria’s alignment was good and she did a number of heroic deeds, unbeknownst to her Jaques Remarque had turned to the criminal underworld when his business was on the brink of bankruptcy. Given his near financial crisis Julia was viewed more as a tool and future asset rather than a daughter.
From a very young age Julia was involved with the criminal underworld. As a child, particularly as a pretty little girl, she was typically beyond police suspicion. She would deliver messages, drugs etc. to third parties.
As she grew older it was clear she was very intelligent. She was a quick reader who was particularly fascinated with poisons. Jacques nurtured her interest, thinking that she could be used to take care of some of his company’s competition. By this point Jacques had a nice foothold in the criminal underworld and was making a pretty penny. His company was doing well; but, the majority of his funding came from the underworld. He hired experts to instruct Julia in the ways of poisons. She learned how to create them and utilize them to various purposes. Some were meant to kill quickly, some slowly and painfully, and some were not meant to kill at all but just intended to cause incredible pain to the victim for interrogation purposes. She also learned about proper antidotes. Her poison was typically placed in food she personally delivered to Jacques’ enemies; but, occasionally it was necessary for her to inject the poisons into the flesh herself. She honed her reflexes so she could accomplish this task quickly and easily in a crowed locations. It was also useful for when things went south and she needed to flee. If she failed at any of her appointed tasks she was punished severely. She also became quite the competent computer hacker. It was necessary to build up her connection of underworld contacts and obtain illegal substances to create known poisons and some experimental ones. It also proved useful in tracking down those who tried to flee from her adopted father.
Although she loved the resources she had access to, the private lab, the excellent computer, private tutors, she loathed the way she was manipulated by her adopted father. She had to do everything he said or she’d end up in an orphanage or worse dead. Best case scenario she would be placed in a lousy orphanage and her future would be over. She saw how much the world was ruled by money. She needed money to get a proper education and later a good job. She also hated how her father told her nothing about her biological parents. She was forbidden to research them as he believed it would be an unnecessary distraction to her work. She tried on occasion to break the rule but she was closely monitored and was always found out before she could find any leads. She would be punished harshly and be forced to cease her search.
She convinced Jacques to allow her to attend college, ensuring him that the extra education would perfect her poisonous art. Really she wanted to build a future for herself and escape his controlling, manipulative grasp for at least a couple of years. She attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in America as it had one of the best toxicology programs. Jacques agreed on the condition that she would come home for breaks and resume her work and that she would digitally track people and acquire certain substances with her computer skills. It was understood that if she failed in these respects all funding would be cut off and she’d be unable to obtain her toxicology degree. She complied and enjoyed her taste of freedom in America. She graduated but remained there to get her PhD. She went back to France to continue to work for her father full time when she was 26.
She knew the only way she could escape Jacques was if he was dead. She plotted to kill him and flee the criminal underworld. She hated her adoptive father and all the things she was forced to do. She wanted a decent future for herself, a legal one at that. Although she had no friends, no loyalty she didn’t like being forced to kill decent people so scum like her father could survive. However, having working in the criminal underworld she saw the need for harsh methods. She had no problem with killing those that needed to die to create a better future, like her adoptive father. Jacques didn’t trust her for good reason and his security was incredible. It took six years to culminate the necessary connections to arrange for his death. The plan still had a decent failure probability; but, she figured it was the best chance she had. Her plot worked and he died as a result of her plan and her own poison. Jacques hadn’t been a fool. He left none of his money to Julia. He didn’t want to give her any extra motivation for killing him. Before he died she used the ‘allowance’ she got from one of her jobs to purchase a plane ticket to Gotham city. When she was in America and not monitored as closely she had finally cracked the mystery of who her parents were. Unfortunately her mother was dead. The only person she could hope to turn to for a better life was her father, Alfred. She wouldn’t have been able to visit him without Jacques’ knowledge before but he was dead now. She only has the clothes on her back and two suit cases. Most of the space is filled with bottles of poisons, antidotes, syringes, and needles. A little bit is taken up with clothes. Penniless she can only rely on the good graces of her father to help begin her new life. She can only hope that no one she’s offended in France will come searching for her.
