Overview: John Constantine is a snarky bastard. His sarcastic attitude and sense of humour can get on the nerves of people even more quickly than the common cold. One can't blame him, however. He is convinced that he is going to Hell when he dies, and wants to do some good in the world before he gets dragged to the pit. He's actually quite a chivalrous man, treating his victims enemies with a sense of honour and respect. Anything to get brownie points to get into Heaven, after all. He likes people with an open mind. It certainly makes explaining occultism a lot easier. After his little brush with death, he realizes how valuable the time he has left is, as he probably won't escape death again.

History

As a child, John suffered from a mental condition that caused him to hallucinate. He saw things that weren't really there, believing them to be demons taken human form. His parents, who were normal, did what parents do and sought help from some of the best psychologists, doctors and (having run out of options) exorcists in the business. Nothing seemed to work on him. Not even being on more than 4 different kinds of anti-psychotics could take the hallucinations away. He sought a release from the constant torture, and so, when he was 15, he cut his wrists in a suicide attempt.

The official story was he was dead for 2 minutes before being revived by paramedics. Whilst under, he swore that he had seen a vision of Hell. That was the last hallucination he ever had. It was as if his condition had gone from his body. Afterwards, he began chain-smoking, being on 15 cigarettes per day by the time he was 30. It is during this period of life that he gathered information on and researched as much about occultism as possible, acquiring quite a library of knowledge on different beliefs and cult practices and rituals.

He entered into the police when he was about 22, and left after a few years to create his own detective agency, Constantine Investigations, which he moved to Metropolis. He took on cases that he considered to be "unusual"; demonic possessions, investigating cults and anything that might be considered "paranormal" by the police. His business card's in the police Rolodex. When he was 31, he was diagnosed with slowly spreading lung cancer, owing to him smoking every day since he was 15.
