Alice shook her head. "I doubt whoever killed them wanted anything to do with me. My parents were business people and they were causing serious issues for several rival companies in France. But I'm not in the business world like they were. I'm not even in France anymore. There's no reason for them to want to kill me."

"This is mostly guesswork." John admitted. "Just eliminating the impossible." Again, he thought about the details and analysed them with his mind. Now that he'd eliminated a grudge against the current owner, he needed to backtrack.
"What about previous ownerships?" he asked. "If you know about them, that is. Was there any kind of cult activity in the house?" He didn't know for sure, but this was Gotham, where almost anything dark was possible.

Alice shrugged. "I heard the place was so cheap because someone died here not too long ago but beyond that I know nothing," she admitted. She scrunched her forehead in thought. "Actually...I think I remember hearing something about a little girl dying. Maybe the doll belonged to her." She had no idea whether or not the occult was involved.

"Doll?" John raised an eyebrow. "Of course. Staring me right in the face." he facepalmed. "You need to lay of the cigarettes, John." He knew that was never going to happen. "If that's right, then it's the doll that's the cause of the problem. Where is it?"

"That's a good question," Alice murmured. "She moves around a lot. Now let's see. The last place I saw her was...Um...I think it was the dinning room." Alice ran to check. She returned with a frustrated sigh. "She's been moving again." She turned to Mr. Constantine with concern. "Oh and you really should try to quit smoking. It's not good for your health," she cautioned. She skipped off to check the other rooms. The doll wasn't in any of them. "Okay...So either in the basement or the attic." She really hoped the doll wasn't in the basement. She had been avoiding that room since the piano incident. She came back with another irritated sigh. "Not in the attic."
She took a deep breath. It would be fine. It was daytime, the piano wasn't playing and...Oh shit. She heard the familiar beginnings of Beethoven's 5th Symphony. She turned to Mr. Constantine nervously, wondering if he heard it too. "My guess is she's in the basement again," she said dryly.

"Little late for that." John muttered nonchalantly, somehow looking a little more grouchy.
"Basements. Why does it always have to be basements?" he asked. "Well, guess it can't be helped." he checked inside his jacket pockets. He had plenty of holy water capsules handy. "Right. I'll need a bible or some other holy book. We'll try exorcising this thing. If it doesn't work...." he removed the Hellblazer from the folds of his jacket and held it up. "Well, I'll improvise."

Now Why did he seem grouchy? She was only worried about his health.
"Well she's not always in the basement. She moves around a lot," Alice said lightly, trying to cheer herself as much as Mr. Constantine. She had quite a fright a few nights ago and really every night since but she hadn't been hurt. Well at least not too badly. She had a few scrapes and bruises from being dragged but nothing serious. She was more scared and shaken up than anything. No real damage.
"Um...Both my parents leaned towards atheism; but, my mother was raised Jewish and I was too so I have a Hebrew bible. Um...but will that work well with holy water?" she asked anxiously. Before waiting for his response she skipped off to the library to grab it. She spun her way back to Mr. Constantine, relying on the twirling motions to settle her nerves.

"That'll do as well." John nodded. "Holy water works pretty well with any faith. It's the power behind the faith that makes it effective. Lesson number two." He felt a little dizzy as he watched her spin back to him. He needed a clear head if he was going to exorcise a possessed doll. Taking the book from her, he rifled through the pages and picked out some select verses.
"They'll do nicely." he said, using the edges of his pocket as a makeshift bookmark, he headed for the basement. There was a reason he didn't really do Jewish exorcisms, despite having studied the faith carefully. He hoped that reason didn't come into play on this job.

"Hmm...But Jews don't really use holy water," she murmured, more to herself than Mr. Constantine. How could a faith give power to something it didn't really believe in or use? "And by don't really use I mean they don't use it all. And they don't even definitely believe in ghosts."

"Hope you're ready. You may not like what you see." John said, not hearing her. He slowly opened the door of the basement and stepped down the stairs, turning the flashlight on top of the Hellblazer on.

Alice took a deep breath to steady herself. "Ready as I'll ever be," she said brightly. "At least it's still daytime. That has to be good, right?" She hurriedly followed after Mr. Constantine. She didn't want him to be trapped down there alone. She caught the door before it closed behind him. She deliberated leaving something behind to keep it open but she doubted that would do much good. If Mr. Constantine thought it would help he probably would have propped open the door himself. Two steps down the stairs and the door slammed shut. She turned back and half heartedly fiddled with the knob. She figured it would do no good and her suspicions were confirmed. They were stuck. She skipped quickly down the steps to join him again.

As John heard the door slam behind him, he turned and shone the light on the door. "I'll bet it's locked." he said, rolling his eyes. Damn you, Constantine. he thought as he turned again and slowly descended the staircase. You're getting cynical. He shone the light across the floor of the basement. There didn't seem to be any sign of the doll. "You'll tell me if you see it, right?"

Alice bobbed her head up and down. "Um...I feel like I probably should have mentioned this before but yesterday in the daytime my Alice and Wonderland book from my father was missing. After searching everywhere I checked the basement. It was on the first step inside. I went to pick it up and it was like someone pushed me and then I was locked in until night. Nothing else happened during the day but I was trapped here until things got worse," she said anxiously. "It's daytime so I don't know if I'll find her. She hides much more in the day," she explained. Alice searched but saw no sign of the doll.
She sighed, staring down at the shattered pieces of glass from the light bulb she hadn't had the nerve to clean up. "I bought another light bulb but...It's upstairs," she said glumly. At least since it was light out they could still see.

John didn't say anything. Instead, he just started looking around the basement. He used the tip of the gun to shift aside boxess, looking for any sign of a creepy possessed doll.

Alice hadn't seen anything and she figured Mr. Constantine would ask for her help if he needed it. Also, he likely had a better idea of what they were looking for. Since there was nothing that immediately needed to be done Alice calmed herself with a few cartwheels and back flips, taking pains not to bump into anything or disturb anything.
